Perfecting Your PMU Aftercare Routine

Getting Permanent Make-Up (PMU) can be a great way to enhance your features and cut down on time spent applying makeup each day. However, the aftercare routine is just as important as the procedure itself for ensuring optimal results. Here are some tips for perfecting your PMU aftercare routine and achieving the best long-lasting effects from your permanent cosmetics.

Listen to Your Artist's Instructions

First and foremost, follow the specific aftercare instructions provided by your PMU artist. This can include information on cleansing, applying ointment, avoiding sun exposure, and not picking or scratching the treated area. The artist likely has a standard aftercare regimen they recommend to all clients based on experience and the products used during the procedure. Stick to their guidelines closely, at least for the first 5-7 days, to allow for proper initial healing.

Cleanse Gently

For the first 24 hours, avoid wetting the treated area at all. After that, you can begin gently cleansing no more than 2-3 times daily using cool water and pat drying with paper towels. Avoid scrubbing or using any exfoliating cleansers, which can slow healing and lead to loss of pigment.

Use Recommended Ointments

Your artist will likely recommend applying a thin layer of tattoo ointment or a special PMU-designed balm multiple times per day. This will keep the area hydrated and prevent scabbing or cracking. Make sure to use a fresh applicator each time to avoid contamination.

Let It Breathe

As much as possible during the first week, allow the PMU area to remain uncovered and open to air. Avoid bandages or adhesive strips that won't allow the skin to breathe.

Avoid Friction and Irritation

Be very gentle with the treated area when cleansing or applying ointments. Don't rub, pick, scratch or traumatize it in any way. Also avoid friction from clothing, exercise, or facial movements that crease the skin. This can disrupt the PMU pigments leading to poor retention. Stay out of pools, saunas and hot tubs for 1-2 weeks as well.

Protect from Sun and Chemicals

Exposure to UV rays, chemicals, or makeup can jeopardize PMU results. Wear a wide-brim hat and apply a mineral sunscreen daily if you must go outside. Avoid skincare products like retinoids, alpha hydroxy acids, benzoyl peroxide and vitamin C for at least 2 weeks post-procedure. These can cause unnecessary irritation and inflammation.

Know When to Seek Help

Most side effects like redness, swelling, itching and tenderness are normal as your skin recovers. However, see your artist or a doctor if you notice signs of infection like oozing, worsening pain, heat, or pus. This could require antibiotic treatment. Contact your artist immediately if you experience significant pigment loss or fading. Some touch up work may be needed.

Be Patient

It takes 7-14 days for microblading strokes or other PMU to fully heal. Maximal color may not be visible until the top layers of skin naturally exfoliate at 2-4 weeks post-treatment. Avoid picking or scrubbing during this time. The true color and results will be more evident once fully healed. Give it time and don't panic!

Sticking to the proper aftercare routine is crucial for getting the longevity you expect out of permanent makeup. Avoid shortcuts and follow your artist's instructions to the letter. With a little patience and diligent care, your optimal, flawless results will shine through!
