Getting Your First Set of PMU Eyebrows: A Beginner's Guide
If you're considering semi-permanent makeup for your eyebrows, you're not alone. Microblading and other PMU techniques have exploded in popularity in recent years as an easy way to cut down on daily grooming. Here's a quick beginner's guide to help you prepare for your first PMU brow appointment.
Before Your Appointment
In the weeks leading up to your appointment, avoid chemical exfoliants, retinoids, and anything else that could sensitize the skin on your eyebrows. Stay out of the sun and tanning beds as well.
Some technicians may ask you to avoid caffeine or other blood thinners for 24-72 hours pre-procedure. Always follow your artist's prep instructions to ensure the best results.
Day Of: What to Expect
The technician will likely start by shaping and measuring your brows. They'll use these measurements as a guide when selecting the size and angle of the tool tip.
Next, they'll cleanse the eyebrow area and apply a topical numbing cream. This helps minimize any discomfort, though you may still feel some mild pinching or scratching.
The artist then gets to work depositing pigment into the skin with tiny strokes that mimic real hairs. Most appointments take 1-2 hours. Some residual swelling and redness is normal post-procedure.
Managing Discomfort
Having a low pain tolerance doesn't have to stop you from getting beautiful brows! Here are some tricks to help you get through the appointment with minimal discomfort:
- Avoid caffeine before your appointment, as it can amplify pain.
- Apply a thick layer of numbing cream and let it sit for 30 mins before starting.
- Use mindfulness techniques like deep breathing to stay relaxed. Tensing up can make it worse.
- Tell your technician if you need a break! Short breaks can help.
Healing and Aftercare
Within the first 24 hours, there will likely be some redness, swelling, and tenderness. This is normal. Keep the brows clean and use an ointment as directed.
For 10-14 days post-procedure, avoid swimming, sweating, and picking at the brows. No facials, chemicals, makeup, or sun on the brows during the healing period. Let any scabbing occur naturally.
Once healed, the pigment will gradually lighten and soften over 4-6 weeks. Schedule a touch up 4-6 weeks later if you wish to enhance the color. With proper aftercare, results can last 1-3 years.
While everyone heals differently, follow your artist's recommendations diligently for the best results from your new semi-permanent brows. And don't hesitate to reach out with any questions or concerns along the way.
